Gretel Going

Partner

Hi, I’m a founding partner at Channel V Media.

My contributions to Channel V Media are media and marketing know-how, and good ol’ fashioned life experience — not to mention a decent amount of common sense. I credit my ongoing love affair with social media to my curiosity and compulsive need to connect with people on an intimate level. I was blogging (a lot) before blogging sold out and went mainstream. I’d like to think that my blogs — yeah, there were a few — drew mainstream media attention and the interest of a few publishing houses because they were good, not because there was less competition back then, but I’ll take what I can get. Either way, I’m lucky to have since transformed my understanding of the online world into a series of successful programs for CVM’s roster of great brands.

Aside from blogging, I spent my pre-CVM days in the cutthroat New York PR world, and at a few Chicago and San Diego magazines (one of which I co-founded). I also ran a publishing association, worked briefly in production at the Jerry Springer Show, and studied at Indiana University.

DNA Researh
I spent most of my college career working toward a career in neuroscientific research. This involved working in a rat lab seven days a week to test the theory that estrogen increases intelligence.* It also involved spending most of my days in a room without windows, which does not a good life make.

Tibet
While at Indiana University, I worked at a restaurant owned by the Dalai Lama’s brother. Many people likely don’t know it, but because the Dalai Lama’s family lives there, Bloomington, IN has a very large population of Tibetan refugees.
New York
When I finally decided to take the plunge and move from San Diego to New York, I put a fake NYC address on my resume so that employers would take me seriously. And when I received interview invitations, I jumped on a red-eye flight across the country so I could be in town bright and early the next day. (I did this five times, yet still didn’t land a job until I moved here.)
Print
Despite my fascination with new media, I have an ongoing love affair with print. This passion recently resulted in the launch of Channel V Books. Our publishing division eliminates all of those elements that make publishing a hassle for business thought leaders and brands, and gives our clients access to a new publishing model for a new media climate.
number II
Before there was Channel V Media, there was numberII magazine — an underground, lowbrow glossy that I co-founded along with Cesar Cruz (now CVM’s creative director). We launched the publication in homage to Dave Eggers’ defunct magazine Might, and named it after our favorite type of pencil.
